Foreigners can own land and structure in Japan. Some buyers report that they bought property on a 90-day tourist visa which would mean you could purchase a nice vacation home for your visits to Japan. However, keep in mind that a Japanese bank will not give you a loan unless you have at least residency status in the country. In fact, most recommend that if you are a foreigner you at least have residency status before purchasing real estate.
